Velaaa Private Island: A Booking Platform for a Luxury Resort

The Client

Velaaa Private Island is a luxury resort. Its website has to do two jobs that pull in opposite directions: sell an experience that trades on exclusivity and calm, and process a booking without friction.

Most hospitality websites are good at one of those and merely adequate at the other. A site that is all atmosphere makes people work to reserve anything. A site that is all function looks like a booking engine with photographs attached, which is a difficult way to justify a luxury price. TRODAD was engaged to build a custom platform that did both.

The Challenge

Velaaa came to TRODAD with three connected objectives: manage bookings, showcase the resort's luxury offerings, and enhance the guest experience.

Those objectives are worth reading carefully, because they describe one problem rather than three. In hospitality the booking flow is part of the guest experience — often the first part of it a guest ever encounters. A prospective visitor who has spent five minutes being persuaded by the photography and then hits a clumsy reservation form has been given a preview of the service, and it is not a flattering one.

Equally, showcasing luxury offerings is not simply a matter of large images. A resort has rooms, villas, experiences and packages, and a visitor needs to understand what is available, what distinguishes each option, and how to find the one that suits them — without being handed a spreadsheet. Discovery is a design problem before it is a technical one.

The brief, in short, was a website that would carry the brand and a booking system that would carry the business, built as one product rather than two bolted together.

The Approach

TRODAD built Velaaa a custom web application rather than adapting an off-the-shelf hospitality template.

That decision followed from the brief. Template-based resort sites tend to impose their own structure on how offerings are presented and how a reservation proceeds, and a property whose entire proposition is that it is not like other properties is poorly served by a layout shared with hundreds of them. Building custom meant the presentation of the resort and the mechanics of the booking could be designed together, to the same standard, instead of one being fitted around the constraints of the other.

The work covered four areas:

  • Elegant design — a visual treatment matched to a luxury property, where restraint and pacing do more work than decoration.
  • An advanced booking system — reservations handled within the site itself rather than handed off to a third-party interface that breaks the experience at the moment of commitment.
  • Responsive design — a layout that works properly across screen sizes, which for a resort is not a technicality. A great deal of travel research happens on a phone, and a site that only comes together on a desktop is asking a large share of its audience to work harder.
  • Search functionality — so a visitor can find the right offering directly instead of browsing through everything the property provides.

The Build

The platform was built on Laravel with a React front end.

The pairing suits this kind of project well. Laravel handles the parts of a booking platform that have to be dependable and unglamorous — the data model behind availability and reservations, the business rules, the administrative side that staff use every day. React handles the parts the guest touches, where responsiveness matters: filtering, searching, moving through the reservation steps without full page reloads interrupting the flow.

Keeping those concerns separate is what allows the booking experience to feel like part of the site rather than a departure from it. The guest stays inside Velaaa's design language from the first photograph to the confirmation, and the resort's team works against a system built around how the property actually operates.

The engagement did not end at launch. TRODAD provides ongoing monthly maintenance for the platform — a standing arrangement rather than a support ticket queue. For a site that takes bookings, this is the difference between problems being noticed by the team and problems being noticed by a guest halfway through a reservation. Dependencies age, integrations change, and a booking platform that nobody is watching is a booking platform that will eventually fail quietly at the worst moment.

The Results

Since launch, Velaaa Private Island has seen significantly increased online bookings and improved user engagement.

Both outcomes point at the same underlying cause. Engagement improves when visitors can find what they are looking for and are not asked to work for it — which is what the search functionality and the responsive layout were for. Bookings increase when the visitors who have been persuaded are able to act on that decision immediately, in the same environment that persuaded them, rather than being handed off to something that feels like a different company.

The wider lesson transfers beyond hospitality. Presentation and transaction are usually treated as separate projects with separate budgets, and the seam between them is where conversions are lost. Building them as one product removes the seam.

Working with TRODAD

TRODAD builds custom web applications for businesses whose requirements do not fit a template — resort and booking platforms among them. Clients order services online, track progress in a client portal, chat directly with the team, and receive full access to design and source files on approval.
